STEAM VENT Coffee House at First Church of Winsted, 95 North Main Street, will be held on 2nd Saturday evenings in March, April, May, June, September, October and November.

The coffee house is held in the church sanctuary, which is made for sound; the room is round with amazing acoustics!

TORRINGTON: The Historic First Congregational Church celebrates their 270th Birthday 12/4/11

The founding Church of Torrington which first gathered on October 21, 1741 is celebrating 270 years of Worship and Service to God. On December 4th at 3PM there will be a Celebration Service followed by a reception in the Church Hall. On display will be many historical items. Included in the display are the Baptism certificate of abolitionist John Brown and a picture and write up of Rev. Lemuel Haynes who was ordained at First Church. Painter Victor Leger specializes in plein-air oil painting, entirely on site in rural Northwestern Connecticut. While in high school, he trained intensively at the Wadsworth Atheneum, under the tutelage of Peter Waite. Leger attended Pratt Institute with full scholarship; he completed his BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1984.

Victor began exhibiting professionally at Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT in 1981. His work has been shown at The Art Guild in Farmington, CT, Canton Art Guild, Torrington's Gallery on the Main and the Atrium Gallery in Torrington, CT. Leger's paintings are included in various public and private collections in the Northeastern US and Canada, and as far away as New Mexico. He is represented by Sherry French Gallery in Chelsea, NYC and by Red Sable and McPhee Fine Arts, both in New Jersey. Victor is an art educator in the Torrington school district.

Learn plein air techniques with award-winning landscape artist, Victor Leger. We will begin with step-by-step ideas for color mixing, composition and brushwork while watching a demonstration of a painting develop from beginning to end. Students will then venture out in the area to complete their own paintings or drawings with the materials of their choice. We will gather at the end for a friendly discussion of positive retrospection with our creations.

WASHINGTON: "Strong Eagle Daly" Flute Exhibit Thru 11/30/11

IAIS will feature the beautifully handcrafted flutes by Nipmuc artist/musician, Strong Eagle Daly. An extraordinary craftsman in his own right, he has worked to hone his skills in flute making, taking his work to the next level through his experience working with other master carvers. Each of his flutes contain a hand carved bird which faces the performer. He was first introduced to flute making 12 years ago while he was visiting his grandfather Hollis Little Creek in Sedona, Arizona. He says that "...in addition to the birds, the spirit of tree resonates through the flute as I breathe new life through it and give it a new voice." Through his observation of other flute players and their varying techniques, he has created his own style and voice by playing from the heart.

Strong Eagle's flutes are made from a variety of woods such as Black Walnut, Tiger Maple, Maple, Poplar and Holly. Most have Mahogany or Ebony ends.

Strong Eagle Daly resides in Worcester, MA.

Exhibition opens in our Museum Gift Shop on Saturday, October 1, 2011 and run through Wednesday, November 30, 2011. There is no charge for this Exhibition.

The public is invited to a presentation on Hospice care on Wednesday, October 5th, at Emeritus at Litchfield Hills, 376 Goshen Road . The program begins at 4:30 p.m. with light refreshments, followed by a talk and discussion led by Joanne White, RN, Hospice Coordinator for VNA Northwest, Inc. It will conclude at 6 p.m. Joanne will present information on end-of-life choices, then explain what Hospice care is, and what benefits are provided to hospice patients. Titled "Dance Fever", a series of dances, sponsored by the Torrington Parks & Recreation Department will take place the second Saturday of the month, October through December beginning on October 8th. Based on attendance and participation, three additional dances may be scheduled January through March 2012. Doors open at 7:30 p.m with a one-hour dance lesson beginning promptly at 8:00 p.m. followed by social dancing until 11:00. The Outing Club will travel to Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden on Saturday, October 15th for an afternoon of hiking. The Giant, known for its expansive clifftop vistas, rugged topography, and microclimate ecosystems, includes a scenic trail leading to the stone observation tower on the peak of Mt. Carmel which provides an excellent view of Long Island Sound and the New Haven area. Also, the Fall Foliage should be brilliant, making the views even more breathtaking. Departure is at 11:15 from the Litchfield Town Hall, 74 West Street, Litchfield for those who would like to carpool. Participants are asked to bring a box lunch to enjoy on the trail. Saturday October 1, Saint Francis Parish on Main Street Torrington will hold a blessing of animals with a procession starting at 11:30, and the general blessing at 12:00 Noon.

No pet is too small or too large and a fun time is guaranteed.

Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals and the environment. Each year the animals are brought to be blessed and enjoy the camaraderie of other pet owners.

This event is open to all and parking is available in St Francis School parking lot across the street.

Food vendors will be on site and the event will be held rain or shine.

On March 26, 2011, a devastating fire left the Bisson Family of Waterbury, CT homeless and critically injured their father, Richard Bisson, who remains in the hospital burn unit. While Richard faces a long, painful recovery and his family struggles to get back on their feet, support is coming from some unlikely sources – NASCAR Racing and Rock & Roll.

On Sunday July 10th, local rock bands “River Mud” and “All In” will host a fundraiser to benefit the Bissons, joining forces with NASCAR racer Pete Thickett and his Competition Systems Racing Team. Thickett has generously offered to donate all of his winnings on the 2011 NASCAR Late Model Series to the Bissons. With River Mud, All In and a number of local businesses stepping up to support the “Racing for the Bisson Family” effort, every checkered flag becomes a victory for a family in need.

Everyone is encouraged to come out to the event and have a great time while helping support the “Racing for the Bisson Family” cause. Featuring live music, prizes and fun, the fundraiser runs from 2-8 PM on Sunday July 10th at City Limits in Waterbury. In addition to the great music, driver Pete Thickett will be on hand to “talk racing” and give you an up close tour of his #33 race car. The public is invited to the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Cafeteria on Friday, February 4th, for the hospital's annual "Go Red For Women Day", held in conjunction with the American Heart Association's national campaign to raise awareness of heart disease in women and encourage them to take charge of their health. The CHH Cardiology Department is offering free blood pressure screenings, tips and information on heart disease from 11:30-1:30 in the hospital cafeteria.
